Manali sits at 2,050 metres in the Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh — 530 kilometres from Delhi on a route that changes character three times. The first stretch from Delhi to Chandigarh is a straightforward four-lane highway. From Chandigarh, the road narrows as it follows the Beas River into the mountains through Bilaspur, Mandi, and Kullu. The final 60 km from Kullu to Manali runs through the valley on a road that requires a driver who has made this journey before — the bends are specific, the river crossings are unmarked, and the approach into Old Manali involves lanes that are not on most navigation apps.
The stretch from Mandi to Manali is what most travellers remember. The river runs alongside the road, the valley narrows, and the mountains become genuinely imposing in the last hour of the drive.
At 530 km, this is a comfortable two-day journey. Most travellers stop overnight in Chandigarh — a clean, well-organised city with good hotel options — and complete the Chandigarh–Manali leg on day two. A direct one-day drive is possible with a very early departure, but the second half of the journey through the Kullu Valley is best done with fresh eyes rather than at the end of a 12-hour driving day.

Recommended Structure
Delhi → Chandigarh (Day 1, overnight) → Manali (Day 2). The Chandigarh–Manali leg alone is 310 km through the mountains and best covered with a rested driver and daylight visibility.
Vehicle Recommendation
For the mountain section from Mandi to Manali, higher ground clearance is strongly recommended. Sedans can manage the route in good conditions but an SUV is significantly more comfortable on the narrower valley roads.
Rohtang Pass
Rohtang Pass at 3,978 metres is open from approximately May 1 to November 15, weather permitting. Permits are required — we advise on current permit requirements and availability when you book.

Delhi to Chandigarh — NH-44 & NH-5
A well-maintained four-lane highway for most of the 250 km. Light morning traffic out of Delhi and Ambala. Your driver routes through the Zirakpur bypass to avoid Chandigarh city centre congestion on entry. Straightforward in all seasons.

Chandigarh to Mandi — NH-21 Foothills
The road narrows to two lanes after Bilaspur and begins its ascent into the Shivalik Hills. The Aut tunnel at 140 km from Chandigarh is the gateway to the Kullu Valley proper. This section requires steady, experienced driving — not difficult, but not a motorway.

The most scenic section. The road follows the Beas River through a series of gorges and valley-floor stretches. Road width varies — some sections are single-track at river crossings. Your driver knows the passing points and the sections where speed must be reduced.

The final 60 km runs through apple orchards and the narrowing upper valley. The road through Bhuntar and up to Manali is well-known to regular Himalayan drivers. Old Manali approach involves a bridge crossing and lanes that navigation apps frequently mis-route.

Day two is Chandigarh to Manali — 280 km through Mandi, the Aut tunnel, the Kullu Valley, and into Manali by late afternoon.
The overnight in Chandigarh means your driver approaches the mountain section of the route rested, which matters significantly for the Mandi–Kullu stretch. Your chauffeur stays with you for the full two-day journey — no change of driver between cities.

A single-day direct drive from Delhi to Manali is possible with a 4:00 – 5:00 AM departure. The full 530 km takes 12 to 14 hours including stops. Most travellers who choose this option do so to maximise time in Manali — they arrive by evening and have the full following day in the valley.
This structure requires a driver experienced on late mountain driving — the final Kullu to Manali section in the evening involves mountain roads in low light. We only offer this option with SUV vehicles and experienced Himalayan route drivers. It is not recommended during monsoon season.

Manali is the gateway to both Spiti Valley and the Manali–Leh Highway. For travellers continuing beyond Manali into Spiti (via Rohtang and Kunzum Pass) or toward Leh (via the Manali–Leh highway), we structure the full onward journey as a single booking with the same chauffeur.

For most travellers, yes. At 530 km, the route is most comfortably done with an overnight stop in Chandigarh — 250 km from Delhi. Day two covers the remaining 280 km through the Kullu Valley to Manali. A single-day direct drive is possible with a 4:00 AM departure but is a 12 to 14-hour day and best suited for experienced mountain travellers.
March through June is the most popular window — roads are clear, weather is cool, and Rohtang Pass opens from May. September and October are the second-best window after the monsoon clears. July and August bring landslide risk on the Mandi–Kullu stretch and require flexibility. December through February sees heavy snowfall — Rohtang closes and some valley sections become difficult without snow chains.

We strongly recommend an SUV or Innova Crysta for this route. The Chandigarh–Manali section — particularly Mandi to Manali — involves narrow mountain roads with uneven surfaces at some river crossings. A sedan can manage this route in good conditions, but an SUV is meaningfully more comfortable and safer on the mountain section. For single-day direct drives and monsoon travel, an SUV is mandatory.
Yes. Rohtang Pass requires an online permit for all non-local vehicles — the permit must be booked in advance and has a daily quota.
