Mussoorie sits at 2,005 metres in the lower Himalayas of Uttarakhand — 290 kilometres from Delhi on a route that divides cleanly into two halves. The first 240 km from Delhi to Dehradun is a straightforward NH-334 run through Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, and Haridwar. From Dehradun, the road climbs 30 km through a series of tight switchbacks up the Mussoorie Road to the ridge. That final ascent — from Dehradun to the Library Chowk in Mussoorie — is what most first-time visitors underestimate. It takes 45 minutes to an hour on a good day, and the road requires a driver who knows the correct lane behaviour at the blind hairpin bends.
The 30 km climb from Dehradun to Mussoorie is what most travellers remember. The switchbacks tighten, the valley floor falls away below you, and the first clear views of the Doon Valley appear before you reach the ridge.
At 290 km, this is a comfortable same-day drive. A 6:00 – 7:00 AM departure from Delhi gets you to Mussoorie by early afternoon — time to walk the Mall Road, visit Kempty Falls, or simply sit on your hotel balcony as the clouds move through the valley below. An overnight stay is strongly recommended over a same-day return — Mussoorie at dawn, with the mist over the Doon Valley, is the experience most travellers come for.
Delhi Cabz has been running the Delhi–Mussoorie corridor since 2010. Our chauffeurs know the Mussoorie Road approach from Dehradun, the correct drop-off points for properties along the ridge, and which sections of the road require slowing for oncoming traffic. The hill section is not technically difficult — but it is a road that benefits from experience.
Recommended Structure
Delhi → Dehradun (240 km, ~5 hours) → Mussoorie (30 km climb, ~1 hour). A 6:00 AM departure from Delhi reaches Mussoorie by early afternoon. Same-day return or overnight — your choice.
Vehicle Recommendation
A sedan or Innova Crysta handles the Mussoorie Road comfortably in good conditions. For winter travel with snow on the climb, an SUV with chains is advisable. Your driver advises on current conditions when you book.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (March–June) and post-monsoon (September–November) offer the clearest skies and most pleasant temperatures. December–February brings snowfall on the ridge — beautiful but road access can be restricted after heavy snowfall.
Pricing
One price covers the full Delhi to Mussoorie drive including fuel and all tolls. One-way, round trip, and multi-day stays with chauffeur availability are all priced and confirmed before departure.
The journey changes character across the 290 km — highway to the foothills, then the Doon Valley, then the switchback climb to the ridge.

First major town on NH-334. Highway is clear at this hour. Your driver routes through the Meerut bypass to avoid city congestion.

~220 km
Optional brief stop at Har Ki Pauri if you want to see the Ganges. Most travellers continue directly to Dehradun without stopping here.

The 290 km divides into three distinct road types. Our drivers are familiar with each section and manage them accordingly.
Stretch 01
Delhi to Meerut — NH-334 Expressway
A six-lane expressway from Delhi to Meerut — one of the smoothest stretches of road on this entire route. Light traffic at 6:00 AM departure and the bypass avoids Meerut city congestion entirely. Clean in all seasons.

All seasons
~1 hour
Stretch 02
Meerut to Haridwar — NH-334 North
The highway continues north through Muzaffarnagar and into the Uttarakhand foothills. Road quality remains strong. Traffic on this section picks up significantly on weekend mornings — weekday travel is noticeably faster from Muzaffarnagar onward.
Four-lane highway
Weekends busier
~2.5 hours
Stretch 03
Haridwar to Dehradun — NH-72A
A 55 km two-lane road through the Rajaji National Park corridor. Scenic but slower. Speed limits are enforced through the forest section. Your driver knows the stretches where wildlife crosses the road — common at dawn and dusk — and drives accordingly.

Stretch 04
Dehradun to Mussoorie — The Climb
30 km of switchbacks from the Doon Valley floor to the ridge at 2,005 metres. The road is well-surfaced but narrow at the bends. Weekend afternoons see heavy two-way traffic with oncoming vehicles at hairpins — weekday and morning timing reduces this significantly. Your driver knows the flow of the road.

Winter Advisory
December – February — Snow on the Ridge
Mussoorie receives snowfall between December and February — occasionally heavy. The Mussoorie Road itself can become slippery or blocked after significant snowfall. Travel during this period requires flexibility and an SUV. Your driver monitors current road conditions and advises on departure timing accordingly.

Landour & Beyond
Mussoorie Ridge — Local Access Roads
Mussoorie spreads along a 15 km ridge. The road from Library Chowk to Landour Cantonment and the Charleville area involves narrow lanes with one-way sections. Hotels in upper Landour require specific approach routes — your driver knows them all and handles luggage drop-off directly at your property entrance.

Local knowledge essential
Delhi to Mussoorie draws a distinct mix — weekend escapes, family summer stays, honeymooners, and writers. Here is who books with us and what they need.
Couples & Honeymooners
Couples on a Weekend Escape
A private car from Delhi to Mussoorie means the drive up the switchbacks is part of the experience — views of the Doon Valley opening below you as you climb. Most couples departing Delhi by 6:30 AM arrive in time for lunch on the Mall Road and a sunset walk to Gun Hill.
Families
Families & Summer Stays
Mussoorie has been a family hill station since the colonial era — and it still is. Families with children travelling for a week or more benefit from a private vehicle for the drive up and daily excursions to Kempty Falls, the Camel’s Back Road, and Landour. We stay with you for the full duration if needed.
Writers & Creatives
Landour & the Literary Crowd
Landour Cantonment — the quieter upper reaches of Mussoorie — has long attracted writers, artists, and people who come to disappear for a few weeks. The approach to Landour requires a driver familiar with the cantonment access roads and one-way lane system. Our drivers have been making this run for years.

Yes. We pick up from anywhere across Delhi NCR — Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, and Faridabad. For Noida pickups, the route to NH-334 via Ghaziabad avoids central Delhi entirely, which makes the early morning start more efficient.
March through June is the most popular window — the hills are green, the weather is cool relative to Delhi, and the views from the ridge are clear. This is also peak season and Mussoorie can be crowded on weekends. September and October offer quieter conditions after the monsoon clears, with good visibility. December through February brings snowfall — beautiful but the Mussoorie Road can close after heavy snowfall.
Yes. Mussoorie’s ridge road has one-way sections, restricted vehicle zones in Landour Cantonment, and approach lanes to upper Landour properties that are not on navigation apps. Our drivers are experienced on these roads and know the correct approach for each area — including the cantonment access and the Charleville area roads.
Yes. All three are within 100 km of each other via Dehradun. A typical combined circuit spends two nights in Mussoorie, visits Haridwar for the Ganga Aarti, and finishes with a night in Rishikesh before returning to Delhi.
